"Whoever calls on the name of the LORD shall be saved"

But the righteousness of faith speaks in this way ... "The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart" (that is, the word of faith which we preach): that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. For the Scripture says, "Whoever believes on Him will not be put to shame." For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek, for the same Lord over all is rich to all who call upon Him. For "whoever calls on the name of the LORD shall be saved."

The Apostle Paul, who wrote the above, is actually quoting the prophet Joel:

"And it shall come to pass
That whoever calls on the name of the LORD
Shall be saved.
For in Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there shall be deliverance,
As the LORD has said,
Among the remnant whom the LORD calls."

This is the simplicity of the Gospel of the Grace of God, that by turning to God in faith and calling on His Name we are saved.

Now straight away we have a problem. When Elijah confronted the prophets of Baal on Carmel they were able to call on the name of their god - "O Baal, hear us!" Elijah, too, was able to call on the Name of the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. But we can't, since nobody knows what His Name is any more. In the Hebrew it consists of four consonants which in English are YHVH, and this is called "the Tetragrammaton" which is simply Greek for "word with four letters". The vowels have not been preserved so we can't pronounce it with any degree of accuracy. Guesses have been made - Jehovah, Yahweh, Yehovah, and so on - but nobody knows. We are reduced to representing the Divine Name by the word LORD in little capitals.

Perhaps God did this deliberately.

God is three in one, and during Old Covenant times He revealed Himself as YHVH. In our day, New Covenant times, "God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds ..." It is now God the Son who has centre stage: "The Father loves the Son, and has given all things into His hand." That is why He can make a claim we are so familiar with that we miss how audacious a statement it is: "Come to Me, all you who labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls." Who else, past, present or future, could make such a claim? And we know his name! We can call on the name of the LORD! His name is JESUS.

"There is salvation in no one else! There is no other name in all of heaven for people to call on to save them". Have you called on the name of Jesus?
